Expect to see a lot of hairy men in Bremerton Washington in early July.

The local Whisker Club is sponsoring the first-ever North American Beard and Moustache championship, drawing bearded men from as far away as Europe.

The event is a warmup for the world championship set for 2009 in Anchorage, Alaska.

Club president Bruce Roe, who has competed in seven world championships, said he is hoping to attract 150 competitors. The contest will be held at the Elks Lodge in Bremerton on July 5.

"Washington is said by some to be the Switzerland of America, and we would like everyone to come and see our beautiful part of the world," said Roe.

The nonprofit Whisker Club donates proceeds to two charities, the Benedict House operated by Catholic Community Services and the Washington Veterans Home at Retsil, which will be adding a new homeless shelter for veterans.

The registration fee for competitors is $25.00 until June 5, when it increases to $35.00. So don’t delay. Register today! Please encourage as many bearded men as possible to register and make this event a rousing success.
